I received several really good responses from Razzers on the subject of Root Canals. Thank you to all!

From personal experience I know that if the bite is not perfectly adjusted on the new crown, it will hurt. So, making sure the bite is perfect would be the first step. Your tooth may not be in need of a root canal, it just may have an incorrect bite that is putting force in the wrong place, causing pain. This type of pain can be excruciating, too.
The other factor is how long ago was the crown put on. It can take several months for the pain to fade.
Two good books to read are "Tooth Truth" by Frank Jerome, DDS and "The Key to Ultimate Health" by Richard Hansen, DDS. Dr. Hansen's website is www.cdchealth.com and there are some good articles there too.

There is a dentist in Glendale, Dr. Paul Erwin, whom I have seen. He is a biological dentist and has computerized equipment that can measure all the forces and angles of force on your teeth and is used to get a bite perfectly aligned. I would see him to evaluate that aspect before going further.

I just had my first root canal a couple weeks ago. In my situation, it kept getting worse and worse, because I needed a root canal, and the next thing I knew, I had major pain on my right jaw, spasms and ear aches only to find out that one of the roots was infected and the other two were inflamed because of the infection. My recommendation is to get the root canal. You will feel so much better afterwards! If I had done it earlier, I wouldn't have had all that excruciating pain. Basically what they are doing is saving the tooth by taking out the nerve. I could've just had the tooth pulled at that point, too, instead of getting the root canal also. But I'm glad I got the root canal.
…Another thing I was going to say is that I never realized how much pain I was in until I had that root canal. The dentists told me that I must've clenched my teeth and fractured my back tooth. They also said I had a hairline fracture on my tooth and that was why it got infected and I had to get a root canal. I found this out later. Anyway, I'd never had a root canal before so I was really scared. The endondist that I went to only does root canals all in one shot (some do it in 3 visits - he said that is not good to do as it can lead to complications and that you should have it done in 1 visit). The root canal took like 45 minutes and was like getting a filling. He numbed the area, but it was not with Novocain, but something that deadened the whole area. Thank God because at that point I was in major pain if I even touched my tooth. Anyway, my insurance paid 80% of it so I only had to pay the 20%. Anyway, I'm now having wins in that hot and cold doesn't bother me anymore on my right side AND I can chew without being in pain. :o) What a win!!!

I’ve had 2 root canals go bad . If I knew then what I know now, I would get an implant after removing the teeth. It’s a chancy thing, some have no troubles with them. There’s a book called Root Canal Cover-up by George Meinig ISBN 0-945196-19-9

I have heard great wins from people needing dental care who used Dr. Ian Shillington's tooth and gum formula. You can get with him and see what he knows. His email is docshillington@knology.net.

I had a crown put on a molar tooth a couple of years ago. It was still sensitive to cold and biting down on it after the crown was put on, and it took about 8 months to a year before the tooth "settled down" and stopped being sensitive. To this day I still can't bite down on anything really hard (like nuts or popcorn) on that tooth.
However, my tooth wasn't really painful, just *very* sensitive, but the sensitivity would go away after the cold/pressure was removed from the tooth.
There was a posting on the Razzline not too long ago regarding a way to build tooth enamel back up. My husband and I have been applying it for the last month and I have already noticed an improvement in my teeth.
The email (below) gives steps for the care of teeth to re-enamelize them. I know there is more information from Dr. Judd regarding how teeth re-enamelize when properly cleaned, and if there is insufficient calcium in the bloodstream, the body will pull calcium from teeth and bones.
Note that this handling to re-enamelize the teeth is a long-term one. You will need other handlings to handle your more immediate situation of the painful tooth, including the assists above.
Good luck, this should help - Here is that email to the Razzline I mentioned:
“Teeth re-enamalize when clean. TO MAKE TEETH CLEAN ONE BRUSHES WITH ANY BAR SOAP. Soap washes off in just 2 rinses. What about toothpastes?
Glycerin in all tooth pastes is so sticky that it takes 27 washes to get it off. Teeth brushed with any toothpaste are coated with a film and CANNOT PROPERLY REENAMELIZE.
Taking calcium and phosphate in the diet results in re-enamelization of the teeth, but only when they are clean. Bar soap does a perfect job in cleaning the surface. The enamel thickens and becomes less sensitive. Adenosine diphosphatase furnishes phosphate to teeth.
Gums are disinfected by brushing with any bar soap. Not only bacteria and viruses are destroyed promptly by small amounts of soap in water, but also white flies and aphids so gardeners can use it too.
Plaque, a poorly formed crystal stuck to the bottom of the enamel, is prevented and eventually removed by brushing with bar soap. Dental procedures to get the badly formed crystals off dig holes through the enamel. These cavities catch food and cause gum infection.
As you can see he states this is because "Glycerin in all tooth pastes is so sticky that it takes 27 washes to get it off. Teeth brushed with any toothpaste are coated with a film and CANNOT PROPERLY REENAMELIZE."
Immediately I went out to get some soap to start brushing with. I went to Whole Foods to get some natural soap free from perfumes and other chemicals, but I noticed something which had me concerned. ALL soap was made with Glycerin!!!
I couldn't find any "natural" soap that was not. And if I found some that didn't list it as an ingredient, they were full of other nasty fake things I wouldn't wash with let along stick in my mouth.
I didn't know what else to do so finally, this morning I called Dr Judd. I spoke with his wife who was VERY helpful. She informed me that it’s the AMOUNT of glycerin and not the glycerin itself. There is a very large amount in all toothpaste and really very small amounts in the soap. This is what makes the soap okay and the paste NOT OKAY!

I had a success using Oregano Oil on a tooth. I was told by a very good dentist that I needed root canal right a way because it was so infected. It did hurt a lot. I read about Oregano Oil and got a small bottle, put it on some cotton string and packed it all around the tooth. It felt better in an hour and after 4 days it was totally handled.

As far as I know the only solution is pulling the tooth which terminatedly handled the infection possibility. Dr Garbutt is all for that and totally against all root canals. The bio-dental dental clinic in Tujuana following the teachings of Hal Huggins ("It's all in your Head" book author, exposed mercury poisoning in the 80s and got his dentist license yanked) does no root canals either. Just pulls the tooth and handles the gap with bridges or implants. The body likes it better for toxicity reasons.

It's not always easy to know when to go medical (get the root canal) and when to stay holistic. My personal guide is, is there an infection, and if there is, can it be cured?
If there is no infection, perhaps time and nutrition will let the nerve calm down and re-calcify! In that case, plenty of calcium and magnesium, essential fatty acids and sunshine (to help the calcium absorb) and lots of patience and you should be okay in time.
If you really need a pain killer to help you sleep in the meantime, my favorite is booze -- it leaves the system in only a day, so it's the least harmful, in my view. I have been advised a few times in life to get a root canal on a tooth that was hurting after dental care, or that I had a wearing of my tooth enamel and might need a filling at some point. (There was no cavity yet, but one could follow in a case of wearing enamel). Each time, I simply waited it out, sometimes for months -- and in each case, the enamel re-calcified, or I was able to avoid the root canal because I had the patience to let the nerve heal from the trauma of work being done.
If there is an infection, it's antibiotics, for sure! If they don't take care of it, then I would go ahead with the root canal. Antibiotics are not the end of the world; you can recover from them easily enough! Root canals are not the end of the world, either! I had one done because a nerve died from an injury. There was no option not to, the nerve was already dead -- and "mother nature" gave me another root canal on another tooth. That nerve had also died, but my body cleared it away without infection. (Childhood accident from playing hide-and-seek in the dark.)

It’s always best to go holistic if you can, but medical options are a real godsend when that's the only remaining choice! I would try some acupuncture before messing with the tooth again. It's excellent tech for unblocking flows.
(See TheRazzLine.net article about recommended acupuncturists in LA - http://www.therazzline.net/article/acupuncture_recommendations_la.html
I also would talk to Dr. Olah (dentist) about root canals, before getting one.

I know of a great alternative Scn dentist. His name is Dr Gerald Regni. He's in Philadelphia. His number is 215-755-4488. He does some pretty advanced techniques. Perhaps you can call & either talk to him or his assistant. He's extremely theta, knowledgeable & helpful. I go to him & I live in Clearwater, FL. I hope this helps.

Ihad to have a root canal and it was painful at first until it healed but I haven't had any problems since then. I was having sinus problems before I had it and then that cleared up. My dentist is a cosmetic dentist and she has almost 30 years experience and she did a great job. I too was real nervous about it because I had heard the same thing. My dentist is Dr. Glenski @ Definitive Dental Care in Palm Harbor, Fl. 727-772-8001.
I don't know where you live but if you are in the Tampa Bay area I would suggest going to her. I did go to my chiropractor after the dental work I had done. I feel it is a good idea to get an adjustment after major dental work. It helped as with pulling a tooth or root canal it did effect my body, it did go out of alignment and the stress effected my adrenals but I got a supplement for that and then all was fine. I don't know of any alternatives other than pulling the tooth. If you get any alternatives I would be interested in knowing about them.

Try http://www.mercola.com/article/dental/rootcanal/root_canals.htm has his suggestions.

Last year I had a root canal done and it worked really well for me. I researched it and I found out that basically what is occurring is that the dentist is disconnecting the nerve from the tooth in order to save the tooth along with cleaning out whatever infection there is. They do this to save the tooth. It is not a big deal. I do recommend it if you want to save the tooth.
As for "it being bad" for the body, what exactly is it that is bad for the body? And from the holistic point of view, if that is the case (it being bad for the body) then what do they recommend for a root that is rotting?
