Nightlife Recommendations:

Most of the nightlife near Clearwater is in Tampa. Hyde Park Cafe is nice, but it should be known that it is a nightclub. It is still an interesting place, with good music.

Pier 60, Clearwater Beach - During the summer on the Clearwater Beach pier they have music, performers, little kiosks with people doing hair braiding, drawing pictures, selling jewelry, etc. It starts from around 7:00 pm and goes till 10:00 or 11:00 pm. In the winter it is only open on weekends.

Sandcastle’s Late Night Café - Saturday night at 10:00 pm or so. Enjoy entertainment while the Sandcastle serves great food. It is at least every other Saturday.

Shepherds’ Resort and Restaurant on Clearwater Beach is very clean; it has an outdoor bar and band that plays on weekends and possibly weekdays. It's right on the water and very nice.

Hard Rock Casino in Tampa is very nice even if you don't like to gamble.

St. Petersburg Saturday night is real groovy, a lot happening there; movies, opera, cafes.

The bar/restaurant at the Marriot Hotel on Sand Key is a beautiful place to have a quiet coffee and chat while listening to the piano player who is there most evenings.

In Orlando, there is there is Downtown Disney which is kind of like LA’s Universal City Walk; clubs, restaurants, shops, etc. Nice at night or during the day.

Tampa Theater in downtown Tampa - Great old movie theater, historical monument, a Spanish-themed palace, spectacular decor, pipe organ that rises up out of the stage (performance before movies), excellent movies, old and new! This theater is worth a visit just to see the inside of the building, with the movies a bonus. The refreshments sold are also very good (fancy coffees, pastries, sandwiches).

Dunedin has a very nice community atmosphere and is a cool place to hang out. It has some incredible restaurants there as well such as the Black Pearl.

Fun Sports & Activities:

Rent jet skis in Tarpon Springs and ride them down the coast to Clearwater and back. Lots of exercise but fun with a group.

If you are into Scuba diving, Mac's Sports has regular day and weekend trips. There is plenty to do underwater within a few hours drive from CLW:

Check out the Crystal River area (about 1 ½ hours from CLW) to rent kayaks and “swim with the manatees”. Call 352-795-1333 for Captain Danny Slider. It's the coolest wild animal adventure ever! The manatees are so loving; a fantastic experience!

You can also rent kayaks from Dunedin causeway and take little adventures to the local islands. This is a lot of fun and a great workout!

Honeymoon Island is about 7 miles north of Dunedin and Clearwater and is a very nice uninhabited island park with a beach. There is an entrance fee of about $4.00 per car, and then you walk a mile or two to the end of the dirt path which takes you to the beach. You can swim at the beautiful beach and if you turn left and walk around back to where you came from along the shore, this walk has nature’s best on either side, especially the osprey in the trees.

Better still is Caldesi State Beach. Caldesi Island is the one you see when you look out from the Sandcastle. It contains CLW Beach and all the hotels, but it also has a second half which is the state park. Caldesi Island is maybe 5 miles long and the park is about 3 miles of it. The only way to get there really is by water. Ferry, Boat, kayak or jet ski. Once out there, it is like being on a deserted tropical island. Really fantastic. It has been consistently rated the #2 or 3 beach in the US for years! During the week days, you can be there and see no one for a mile or more. Fishing around here is quite good, I have a couple small boats and the waters around Caledise and Honeymoon Island are very clear with sandy bottoms.

Other Fun Activities:

There are some spring fed rivers about an hour or so north of the Clearwater area which have crystal clear fresh water and are just fantastic.

Bicycle along Pinellas trail into Dunedin Evening walk along Dunedin coast line just north of Sunset point.

Early morning swim at Clearwater Beach. Try the northern part of the beach as it is less crowded and has plenty of parking.

John's Pass by Treasure Island is a lot of fun. The board walk has a great view with lots of great places to eat and there is live music as well. It is one of my favorite places; you can watch dolphins swim almost every time you go or you can do one of the fun boat rides. Parasailing, boat rentals, pirate adventure, etc.

Busch Gardens - 30 minutes away

Adventure Island - Water park near Busch Gardens

Safety Harbor has a monthly event, can’t remember the exact day of the month, but the town is charming and artsy.

Tarpon Springs – a fun place to go that has boat rides, shops etc. Take one of the boat tours; they are cheap and a lot of fun. Great place to spend a Sunday afternoon. Go there for walks and to eat in some of the little café’s on the side streets.

All of the events at Coachman Park

The Saturday morning Farmers Market in St. Petersburg

St Armand’s Circle by Sarasota is a great place to shop, eat and just hang out. They very often have live music there as well. You also have the Barnum & Bailey Mansion to visit in Sarasota as well as their museum.

Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, not your ordinary zoo-type setting at all.

Clearwater Marine Aquarium

Day fishing trips off
Clearwater Beach

Set up a jam session with The Jam Band! Tel: 727-488-7988, Cary Goulston

Have a picnic on the Causeway

Check the Thursday edition of the St. Pete Times for their weekend activities.

If you can get a motorcycle it is always fun to ride around and explore neighborhoods or go down the local coast near Sand Key.

There are lots of golf courses, tennis courts, and baseball fields in the Clearwater area.

Catamaran boat rentals from the beach at the Dunedin causeway.

Congo River miniature golf on US 19 south of Gulf to Bay on the west side.

The IMAX theater is about 30 minutes away in Tampa. It is awesome; just saw Spider Man and it was mind blowing. They have all kinds of shows and museums.

The Dali Museum in St Pete has the world's largest collection of his works and the docents are fabulous at explaining it.

Short Day Trips:

Long Boat Key in Bradenton is a beautiful day trip. The water is blue and the sands are white; you’ll love it if you are a beach go-er!

One of the best day trips to date has to be a trip to the Chassahowizka State Park for either camping, boat/canoe rental. Swimming in the springs which are the head waters of the river and/or a trip down the river are amazing. Another good day trip is to the Peace Caves in Brooksville which are small but adventurous limestone caves.

Any springs are great in the summer. The closest one to Clearwater is Lithia Springs on the other side of Brandon, but a three hour drive gets you to the best in the state which is Ginny Springs outside of Gainesville. Devils Den is an underground spring close by and the Ichnetucknee River is a blast as a four hour tube float. The Springs at Rainbow River up north (Dunnellon Florida) is a great place for the day or even longer, you can rent inner tubes and go down the river leisurely. Once you get down to a certain point (it takes 4 to 5 hours on the water) there is a shuttle that will bring you back. Go with some friends and make it a fun time.

There is a great KOA campground in St. Pete of all places. Takes only half hour to get there from Clearwater. They have cabins with A/C, a fishing dock, picnic areas, a nice swimming pool and a game room. Also, it's right next to the Pinellas trail which is great for biking. In the evening we went to Madeira Beach which is a few minutes away and had a fantastic meal at a Thai restaurant there. The following morning on the way home we stopped at Indian Rocks Beach and it was gorgeous! From my experience living here for several years, I found that I prefer evenings and mornings as the best time to go to the beaches. They are just around the corner but when you get there, you can pretend you're far from home! You can find this KOA campground on the internet very easily at

Captiva and Sanibel Islands are beautiful for weekend trips, and Fort Meyers is on the way. Lots of stuff to do there and is about a 2 hour drive from Tampa.

Sarasota is a nice drive down and visiting Siesta Key beach is great. There are lots of cute shops up the beach that have been there for years. Good dining around there also.

A trip to the Ringling Bros Museum and Home is excellent. The home was actually used in part of a film with Gwyneth Paltrow.
